This knitted hand warmers by Purl Bee look like they would be very comfy. They also look hip and trendy. They give your fingers some breathing room so you could still wear them on a day that wasn't quite as cold as it should be -- like so many of the winter days seem to be ever since global warming started. Mittens with holes that free your fingers also make it much easier to grasp things. You could select different colors than the Purl Bee used but you should make sure they are colors that work well together before you start making the hand warmers.
You can find a tutorial and pattern on the Purl Bee (hat tip Craftzine.

Look at this fabulous Gollum hat from Regina Rioux Gonzalez at Crochet Me. It's perfect for fans of fantasy novels. You can wear it and go about complaining of those nasty hobbitses that want your precious.
Want to sport a conversation piece that is as appropriate on the convention circuit as it is for a day of snowboarding? Well then, this hat's for you! Inspired by my favorite LOTR villain, this big-eared chapeau is worked up in warm wool Koigu and created entirely single crochet. Short rows are used to create a wrinkled brow, and easy construction techniques allow even the novice crocheter to tackle this wacky headgear with little problem. It's a satisfying project that is sure to turn heads.
Every geek needs socks that remind him or her of Atari games. These TechGuy socks should do the trick.
This sock pattern, written for supersoft, superlight, superwash sport weight yarn, is a great basic pattern that can be used to make your tech guy smart looking socks with just a touch of tech. Or, if your guy's not so geeky, leave out the tech and make regular guy socks. (Heck, knit the small size and make some for yourself!) For techy socks, use one of the charts provided or make your own. In fact, most of the images from old video games or computer screenshots are already pixelated for you. Just draw in the graph lines and you’ve got yourself a chart!
Magknits has the patterns and instructions here. Here's a good techno song to play why you are making them. (via Make)
